"60th Wedding Anniversary" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-19 12:21:01

A voracious reader of all genres of romance: historical paranormal contemporary romantic suspense and science fiction/futuristic/alternate reality. Bob's parent's 60th Wedding Anniversary is November 30th and we decided to fly to North Dakota to celebrate with them. This decision was prompted by an email from his aunt who laid a bit of a guilt trip on us. She said basically that she wished we lived closer to her (and them) and wouldn't it be nice to surprise them with a visit in honor of this momentous event. Then she started cataloging all their various aches and pains and ailments. I'm sure we deserved to be slapped alongside the head with this wakeup call. Several weeks ago Bob and I talked about going out there but had decided against it because But really those are pitiful excuses. We won't have them much longer and we need to make more of an effort. BTW. I adore my in-laws. Plus the love they have shown their grandchildren makes them the best grandparents on the planet. My MIL never forgets a birthday and continually tells me she feels she's so lucky her son married me. My FIL is a hoot and loves to laugh and tell stories of his youth. In fact they both love a good joke and laughing is their favorite past time. They were hard working farmers and lived on the farm up until about 5 years ago when they had to move into the city - Minot - where they are closer to good medical care. Last year they moved into an assisted living facility because things have been getting harder for them. My MIL is 87 and my FIL is 82. An older woman/younger man story spanning 60 years. :)We will arrive on Friday (30th) around 4:00 and go to dinner at their favorite restaurant. Then Saturday we will spend all day with them. I've heard talk from some relatives that they are trying to arrange some kind of open house party for them that day. Since we are 1200 miles away we can't help out with the plans which makes me feel bad but I said we would contribute the money if they wanted to reserve a meeting room in a hotel to hold the party. Bob's sister is in North Dakota so I'm sure most of the party planning will fall on her unfortunately. We will head back to Seattle on Sunday morning. I love my MIL as much as my mom and she filled the void when my mom died in 1999. We used to talk and laugh together on the phone. But in recent years she has been getting more forgetful so whenever she calls she keeps the conversations very short. I really think she is afraid she will repeat herself or make a mistake about her memory. But really I don't care. I love her and she can say anything and I won't judge. But you can tell she is very self conscious. She has a pacemaker and Bob's aunt says that the only thing keeping her alive. My main problem now is figuring out an anniversary gift for them. Help! I need suggestions! What do you get for a couple in their 80's who live in assisted living facility? I was thinking about some food item or treat but that seems like a stupid anniversary gift. Their apartment is very small so they don't have a lot of room. They will probably say that our presence will be gift enough but I think 60 years deserves something. Hi Renee :DI think you're taking the right decision to go and celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. I think they'll be happy to spend this special day with their family... Also as you said they won't be there forever. Gift huh? I think you should try a family picture.. maybe by a professional? or perhaps gather as many family photos over the years and put them in a frame. What a gift to still have them in your life. I think Nath is on to something with the pictures. Maybe one of those collage frames with several pictures of your family over the years with a current one in the middle? I like the idea of a professional family picture but we won't have time to get one before the party. But I can dig through all my old photos and do a collage or something. Thanks everyone. I feel the same way about Bob's parents. The women in the family are the daughters she's never had (she had 7 boys) and she spoils us. Now there is only one gift Mama Smith asks for anymore and that's plain hard cold cash. Yep. Hard to find cash on sale ;)The boys did buy her one of those digital frames that will scroll through pictures. Not sure if you have seen them. They are fairly expensive and then you would need to fill a card with pictures that would automatically blink on the screen. CindyS Cindy: That's a lovely idea! I haven't seen them but I'm sure they'd love it. Can you send me a pointer to one online? You have my email. A romance reading junkie who reads a wide variety of fiction but romance is my favorite. Who am I kidding? Pretty much everything I read is a romance or has romantic elements.

The following is an interview I had the allow of conducting with Bro. Jeff Breza. May God continue to allow your ministry to flourish and furnish you souls for your labor. Flashpoint: What prompted you to begin this ministry at the Assisted Living center? Breza: I began visiting this facility in 1997 because my Grandma Mary Breza started living there. She said “that would be fine but that I should ask the Activities Director.” I spoke with the Activities Director and explained that I wanted to play for my Grandma in her room. The Activities Director suggested that I compete for all the residents. Shortly thereafter we set up a concert for the residents. My daughter Emily and I sang and played old standards primarily. After this event which was in the fall of that year we put together a Christmas program for the staff and residents. In early 1999. I felt led of the Lord to start a Bible study on a regular basis. The staff was very supportive and the residents were very open and receptive to having a church service / Bible study. I started doing this on a bi-monthly basis. "Brattleboro's Aging Population" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:28:06

Feeling old?In 2004 the Windham desire Term Care Network created a sub-group called the "Windham Regional Healthy Aging Steering Committee" (WRHASC) to investigate the needs of an aging population in the area create a vision for a livable and viable community for all and to develop an action intend to address the needs that were determined. South East Vermont Successful Aging Coalition released a report that describes our aging Windham County population as a problem similar to global warming: "incremental largely invisible but also inevitable with consequences that are widespread and potentially devastating."At a press conference Tuesday they announced that the over 65 population will change magnitude by 43% by 2015 and over 85 by 20%. The working population pegged at 20-64 years of age is expected to change state slightly. "The force of a smaller younger workforce supporting a larger aging population cannot be underestimated" says the report. "The next generation of smaller population size ordain be asked to provide an increased variety of give for their elders."Will they be to act on this task? It seems assumed that younger folks ordain rally to the call. (Note to older self: be nice to young people). All sorts of issues arise as our population ages. Issues of limited housing options the ability to maintain home ownership remaining at home while ill and getting proper care are all listed as the biggest concerns in the report. Additionally there becomes an increased demand for services and an increased be for public transportation. The report says that our sprawling rural settlement hinders us in this regard. In short it will come about it is going to be us measure money and resources and we aren't really prepared. At least not yet. The chew over is intended to make people aware of the problems that we may be facing as a community and to get us to mouth to bring home the bacon on them. The United Way was one of the sponsors of the report. I asked their president. Konstantin von Krusenstiern what the inform means from the United Way's perspective. (I'm assuming United Way would be especially interested in the increased bespeak for services that is anticipate.) He says "The furnish lie is that this report is a wake-up call. As a community we be to start taking challenge now or we’ll be in crisis drink the road." So what do we need to do as a community to prepare? "The key thing to first understand is that an aging population affects EVERYONE not just those getting older. We must bring home the bacon broadly across sectors to prepare for this growing population: housing transportation health services social services education and employment as well as the recreation and cultural sectors." says Konstantin. "We must work collaboratively and have a holistic come as we prepare for major demographic shifts in our community." The inform for example recommends that we "change magnitude the give of quality affordable housing in close proximity to retail medical dental and social services schools places of worship and places of work." But the words "affordable housing" cause nightmares for some people. Can we do it? Konstantin thinks we can. "While there have been some challenges with affordable housing in this community those challenges are dwarfed by the many success stories. Windham County has some exceptionally creative and passionate populate working in the housing sector and more progress has probably happened here than anywhere in Vermont.  We live in a great community and if we go a careful and deliberative process great cram ordain come about." What happens if we do by this? He says "We can’t ignore it.  We won’t ignore it."The full report has specific recommendations for next steps in the categories of Collaborative Planning. Health and Social Services. Transportation. Housing. Recreation and Education. Employment. Financial and Legal Services. I'll give you a few samples of what it says we should be doing:- "work with current employers to change magnitude the diversity and expansion of part-time employment opportunities"- "change magnitude the availability of quality affordable rental housing and housing for purchase"- "back up and give different housing models such as cohousing"- "act new and keep existing and future sidewalk and walking/biking paths"- "Accurately identify the current and projected shortfall in health and social services. This will require a different methodology than currently used. "- "change magnitude the availability of assisted living facilities"Brattleboro has been on the forefront of care for quite some measure. The go helped sooth people's jangled nerves. The Thompson believe assisted seamstresses when it began. We undergo Hilltop House. Holton domiciliate. Eden Park and other elder care facilities available right now. The inform suggests though that we have more to do if we want everyone in the community to be a long healthy productive life. Photo: Ron and Dorothy Hall aresenior citizens currently residing at Hayes Court in West Brattleboro. Theydesperately need to find an assisted living facility and undergo been unable tofind one with lay. They have encountered 2+ year waiting lists. The Windham County Successful Aging Community Study was conducted by The Medical Foundation and funded by the Thomas Thompson Trust. United Way of Windham County and the Council on Aging for Southeastern Vermont. An Executive Summary from the Study is available online or by mail: contact The Council on Aging for Southeastern Vermont toll remove at 1-866-673-8376. The entire Study is available online at Yeah the population is aging. Somebody told me that the time to plan for your old years is when you turn 30. But I guess most people wait until the last minute. Savings are the biggest hurdle for most people. I think the age of the ibrattleboro reader/writer should be the affect of the next homepage analyse unless it has already been done. Chris,I looked at "Open schedule" and saw that it wasn't about age but about something else. In fact when I assumed it was about age here's what you wrote approve to me:"Nowhere does the poll have in mind ages. The schedule isn't necessarily an autobiography - it could be sci-fi a fairy tale a how-to a western a mystery etc. Those answering Illustrations would be how old? : )" I intend on taking the last money I have and buying a bunch of ice to make an iceberg on which to float and launch my old butt into the Connecticut to drown honorably like the Eskimos.---A lie runs around the world while the truth is tying its laces. annikee - I love your image. Pretty well matches one I read about once: "She was measure seen going drink the Amazon swigging drink a bottle of sherry in a boat powered by natives." I much prefer either your method or that of the unknown lady to being condescended to by well-meaning younger people. I'm way too gnarly to evaluate that kind of what I consider. "egest." Besides in today's world the concept of "If you undergo nothing you can't back up others. Take compassionate of yourself and yours first," makes absolute comprehend. We cannot have a ameliorate utopia where everyone is happy healthy loved and cared for. Sometimes I feel that those espousing such an eden are those employed in the programs alledgedly taking care of everybody else. Everybody meaning all those populate who can't get a financial foothold.

"Differences Between Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilites and ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 17:44:00

Benjamin Franklin said it best - “nothing in life is certain object death and taxes” but with daily advancements in science technology and health care. Americans are living longer than ever before*. This blessing however has created a unique dilemma for modern American families: How to plan for and prepare for one’s retirement years. undergo you taken a road-trip lately? Almost every highway is graced with large bill-boards providing the locations of new planned communities where couples can spend their retirement years dedicated to recreational pursuits. I doubt you will find a local newspaper that doesn’t have at least one ad promoting the amenities open at a local assisted living facility. Try to search for “nursing homes in Virginia” on the Internet and thousands of web pages will appear. Each and every day new facilities offering different programs are being built and marketed across the state. Is such a facility right for you and your family? If so which facility? We often hear the terms “retirement community,” “nursing home,” and “assisted living facility” but rarely consider what these terms actually mean. The differences however are striking and it is imperative to understand these differences when making choices for yourself or your loved ones. In Virginia a nursing home means any facility with the primary function of providing long-term nursing compassionate nursing services and health-related services on a continuing basis for the treatment and inpatient compassionate of two or more non-related individuals**. Put simply a nursing home is a facility designed for someone who needs less care than a hospital but requires daily health care assistance. The Virginia Department of Health licenses such facilities and has established guidelines regulating various aspects of their operations programs and staffing needs etc***. For example a nursing domiciliate must: (a) undergo written policies and procedures regarding the treatment of residents and the management of resident compassionate which are available to residents and their families (12VAC5-360-20); (b) give emergency medical services within 15 minutes under normal conditions (12VAC5-360-50); (c) be affect to unannounced on-site inspections of the nursing facility by State employees (12VAC5-371-60); (d) have a written agreement with one or more physicians licensed by the Virginia Board of care for to answer as medical director (12VAC5-371-230); and (e) each resident shall be under the care of a physician licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine (12VAC5-371-240). In addition residents of nursing homes are also given certain rights as defined by Virginia label §32.1-138. See http://leg1 state va us/cgi-bin/legp504 exe?000+cod+32.1-138. Nursing homes are the most regulated and structured residential options for our Seniors requiring some level of daily health care. If the facility provides compassionate through Medicare and Medicaid programs it is deemed a “Certified nursing facility” (Virginia Code §32.1-123; Virginia Code §32.1-127) and must be in compliance with both federal and state laws. Of course the more rules and regulations that define and hold back the daily operations of a nursing home the greater the responsibility of the cater. These are the people who ordain be charged with the daily task of caring for your loved one and making sure they are in compliance with state and federal laws. No be how nice and or attractive the facility might be the staff will alter the difference between your loved one being cared for and encouraged or not. “Assisted living facility” means an adult care residence which has been licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services to provide a aim of service for adults who may have physical or mental impairments and require at least moderate assistance with the activities of daily living. Within assisted living there are two types: regular assisted living for those seniors (typically) who need assistance with one or more daily activity; and intensive assisted living for someone who may be incapable of performing activities due to mental and/or severe physical impairment (12VAC30-120-450). The Virginia Department of Social Services licenses assisted living facilities but does not adjust in the way the Department of Health regulates nursing homes. While there are Virginia guidelines regulating aspects of assisted living facilities they are limited: An assisted living facility must: (a) provide or coordinate personal and health care services; and (b) provide 24-hour supervision. As reflected in the delay below assisted living facilities have no obligation to give health care and/or have health care staff available to back up your loved one. In addition with no obligation to provide such services there is the challenge as to whether or not they owe a duty to inform or treat residents with illnesses or diseases that could be transmitted from other residents. While a nursing home will undergo many nurses on cater and doctors hired to observe the residents assisted living is more analogous to an apartment building or college dorm where laundry and food services are provided and residents are on their own for the rest of the day. - Who is basically independent but may not be able or willing to prepare their own food or control to doctors’ appointments; - Someone who wants to scale approve and anticipates needing assistance with laundry cooking etc in the near future. - A bring together where one spouse is independent but may be assistance in feeding and or providing for needs of other spouse. A Continuing Care Retirement Community provides care depending on your current needs. Like an insurance policy the resident pays an entrance fee and periodic adjustable payments which in move gives the resident a package of residential and healthcare services that the CCRC is obligated to give at the time these residential and health care services are required. For example if upon entering all you be is help with your meals that is the only service which will be provided. If you demand intensive physical therapy or God forbid daily assistance for a Dementia patient the CCRC has assisted living services or nursing home services available under your assure. Continuing compassionate contracts are regulated by the Virginia Bureau of Insurance of the Virginia express Corporation Commission. Many CCRCs can undergo nursing domiciliate services available either on-site or at licensed facilities off-site (12VAC5-360-10). While you may be entering the Retirement Community as a very healthy independent and capable resident as your needs change so will your contract with the Community and in turn the facility’s obligations to you. It is always beat to speak to a family member of a current resident and pay time getting to experience the staff no matter what type of facility you are looking into. If looking and researching is not enough then consider the below – a comparison of the legal duties of a nursing home compared to the legal duties of an assisted living facility in Virginia. DUTY or REQUIREMENT (Nursing domiciliate=NH. Assisted Living=AL) Duty to provide nursing care and or observe resident’s health? NH=YES AL=NO Doctor required to supervise residents? NH=YES AL=NO Each resident shall be under the compassionate of a physician licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine? NH=YES AL=NO Must have nurses on cater? NH=YES AL=NO Must offer rehabilitative services? NH=YES AL=NO Must have ongoing consultation.
