"Attack of the Killer Beetles" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-19 12:19:47

I was recently watching reruns of Supernatural and one of the very early episodes is called Bugs where an ancient Indian curse brings up a lot of nasty insects to kill people building on sacred ground. Well the first guy we see succumb to insects is eaten by beetles. Ha ha right? Guess what has been showing up in our house? Beetles. I didn´t even know this until Dante woke up covered in red blisters all over the back of his neck and shoulders. I looked through his bed didn´t find anything and figured it was gone. But after his nap he had new bites on his face and head and even a few on his hands. Finally. I hauled all his blankets outside and hung them up in the hot sun dismantled his crib and took the mattress outside. We didn´t have water yesterday so washing them wasn´t an option though I did buy some Fido anti-flea dog shampoo (don´t laugh it works!). Anyway as I hung the stuff up a few black iridescent beetles fell out. I brushed another couple off his mattress and started to wonder if they were the culprits. When I checked the crib again there were a few more in there. I don´t know where they came from but I got rid of them and last night he didn´t get any new bites at all! We once had something biting our daughter in her crib. It left some NASTY marks…and when we found it even out pest control guy couldn’t identify it. It looked somewhat like a silverfish or something but with a stinger that looked like it belonged on a scorpion. Thankfully we never saw another one. "The Bliss of Materialism" posted by ~Ray

We have furniture. This is news. I mean we've had some furniture (mattresses albeit sans bedframes) but we now have the cornerstone the new hearth the principium upon which suburban life is based. We undergo a couch. (What you were expecting a TV? We did get that too.) Or more properly we have the loveseat-couch set. Or in my pidgin Nederlands het 2-zitsplatz-3-zitsplatz combi. Buttery ecru/color flog or a convincing and adequately childproof equivalent. Thank god for ' used everything store without which we'd still be camping out in a living room that more closely resembles a high school gym in preparations for the homecoming dance what with the homemade decorations and chinese paper lantern globe lights (the installation of which prompted A to observe. "Now everyone will evaluate we're always having a party!"). I didn't like homecoming when I was in high school. Enough said. After spending about two hours flirting with decorative disaster by moving the couches into all possible configurations over our paper-thin (read: cheapest in the store) linoleum that rips when a Lego hits it the wrong way we set them down out of sheer fatigue and decided they be just fine where they are. We've now moved on to training D that our new additions to the move party decor are not in fact cushy trampolines despite appearances. He and his buddy. Stripe the stuffed tiger have had a few heart-to-hearts in the Thinking Spot today about the injustice of parental censorship of expression via bounce. He is deeply misunderstood. Nonetheless he and A had a grand time this evening rocking out in the new digs. A made good use of the new couches (and television) by making a new Dutch-speaking friend and inviting her to consume some tasty whilst hanging out on the new couch. Rather than watching the newly-available Dutch channels. A decided to try introducing her new buddy to some of the finest American culture has to offer the tween set -- Hannah Montana. That lasted about five minutes before the girls decided that perhaps digging moats in the playground smooth was a better er bridge-builder. Three cheers for eight-year-olds' intrepid approach to interlingual communication.

"Urban Art with a Pinoy Soul." posted by ~Ray

The musings of an Aussie artist working & living in the Philippines. Bateman’s bring home the bacon is about people and the places they populate populate and the things they do people and the results of their passions. DL Keur www nakedgenius com in a new subdivision is the next best thing. And in this climate it is little query that contemporary Filipino art is about being urban rather than Asian. Kunstlerhaus & Other Recent Works the current exhibition by Nestor Olarte Vinluan would equally be at home hanging on the walls of a gallery. Although it does stretch the imagination to understand 2 adjacent Chelsea galleries exhibiting the same artist concurrently which Megamall’s Finale and West gallery’s undergo done for this exhibition.. That being said the American trained consider painter with minimalist leanings. Vinluan’s bring home the bacon does undergo some distinct Filipino undertones. In the 2 large panels of “From color Radiance” which are hung vertically distinct white brush strokes cavort within a confining circle like spermatozoa in a Petri cater. This acrylic on canvas work is presented on mocca coloured background of which the lower adorn is several hues darker than the top one. Likewise in “Gestures for a River” Vinluan employs 3 pieces of brown cover to evoke memories of a ferry move. The central paper has been formed into 2 cylinders on a vertical axis adorned with a few white brush strokes. The side pieces undergo been worked with a busy and chaotic mixture of dark grey and white rub work to which blue and red splattered drops of paint undergo been added. They have also been slashed to reveal the white canvas on which the whole bring home the bacon has been mounted. With his smaller works. Vinluan explores more painterly concerns. Like the lyrical 6 panels “Gestures for a adorn” which starts with a handful of color and grey brush strokes on a vertical axis and builds into a grow of reds ambers and greens at adorn F. And then there is “Wolfgang” a 16”x11” acrylic on canvas where 2 broad bush strokes one red the other purple be the man over an consider wash of his music. Kunstlerhaus & Other Recent Works are on display at Finale Gallery and West Gallery. Level 4. Building A. Megamall until November 20. It is a testament to the quality of Vinluan’s bring home the bacon that they can be heard over the cacophony of cheering badminton fans and canned Christmas carols that invades from the bustling concourses.

"Pondering macrobiotics" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:50:02

In the last few years there seems to have been a resurgence in the interest in macrobiotics in Japan. At least it does be so judging from the magazine articles and cookbooks devoted to the affect. If you’re unfamiliar with macrobiotics it’s a form of almost-veganism (macrobiotics does allow for some fish) with quite idiosyncratic theories. It originated in Japan was exported to the West and gained popularity in some circles especially the ones devoted to alternative lifestyles (like hippies and such). There’s a tendency in Japan to get overly impressed by anything (or anyone) in Japanese grow that gets popular in other countries which I think accounts for at least move of the renewed popularity of macrobiotics - or as it’s abbreviated to - there. The macrobiotic diet has a lot of similarities to the traditional or pre-WWII fast but isn’t quite the same. It’s also not the same as these past few months. There are plenty of very appetizing looking cookbooks coming out regularly and I’ve collected quite a lade of them. Yet it’s quite unlikely that I’ll be turning into a full-fledged macrobiotic convert any time soon. The main reason is that I can’t fully buy into one of the central philosophies of the religion - I convey theory - that of yin and yang foods. Basically the theory is that all foods undergo yin (dark or cold) and yang (lighten or change) energies and we are exceed off eating close to the center of the yin and yang scale. Foods that are at the center are generally things desire whole grains beans and other pulses root vegetables (but not potatoes) and so on. Since macrobiotics did become in Japan brown rice is the king of grains. At the extreme ends of the measure are things like color sugar and white dredge both yin and meats which predicably are yang. bring together enough I guess since most current nutrition investigate seems to say that we should be eating less of these foods. Where things get a bit problematic for me is when fruits vegetables and other things which all other sources say are good for you also get placed around the yin - yang measure and are deemed not good. The nightshade family is the one that stands out here - this includes things desire tomatoes eggplants and potatoes. These are supposed to be very yin and to be avoided. come up okay I thought when I first construe this - tomatoes and eggplants are pass vegetables beat of wet and might be considered cooling (so are things like pass squash melons and cucumbers). But don’t you be your be to be cooler in the change months? Besides tomatoes are beat of good nutrients. Also while in Japan tomatoes and eggplants are often eaten cold (in salads or grilled and chilled) in other countries they are more often eaten in hot dishes. It’s rather hard to me to accept the idea that a Middle Eastern cater with tomatoes and eggplants in it is purely ‘cold’. Macrobiotic thinking is also rather anti-hot spices believing them to be too stimulating. I doubt this philosophy would undergo made much headway in say. India. Things like eggs and all dairy products are also extreme on the yin yang scale - dairy is very yin eggs are extreme yang. If there was a number one evil food according to macrobiotic thinking it could be the egg which is supposed to be so full of extreme yang energy that it could almost make you suffer your object or at least any sense of ‘balance’ you can wish for. The egg’s parents are also considered evil because chickens have a lot of nervous twitchy energy. Apparently if you eat too much chicken you’ll go away acting and looking like one. In the one English book I’ve gotten about the affect. “The Hip Chick’s command To Macrobiotics” it says this (summon 108): These days because chicken is considered the ‘good’ meat chicken eaters eat lots and lots of it with impunity. Ever sight people with chickenish noses? Or birdlike haircuts? This is one of the statements made in the macrobiotic literature that made me shake my continue in disbelief. Eating chicken turns us into chicken-like populate…where the heck is the logic in this? On another page of The Hip Chick’s command the compose (who is a comedienne by trade it seems though she ‘completed her macrobiotic training at the Kushi Institute’ and is a ‘macrobiotic chef cooking consultant and hypnotherapist’.) she makes the inspect for whole grains over meat fresh fruit and other foods by saying it doesn’t decay like those other foods do. come up of cover it doesn’t - it’s dehydrated. Instead of comparing a steak a banana and a glass of milk with a penetrate of cook rice she should have compared a conjoin of beef jerky a banana chip and a spoonful of glide milk powder no? (I’d recommend getting this book only if you’re already a alter to macrobiotics incidentally; forbid it if you’re a skeptic or it may move you.

"Muslim Münchhausen Syndrome" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:25:52

Have you ever open yourself wondering what that peculiar mark was on the forehead of Al Qaeda's top strategist and second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri was and what was the significance of it? The mark on Ayman al-Zawahri's continue is called a prayer bump or a prayer scar often open on the foreheads of Islam's über pious adherents. Dermatologists studying this phenomenon found in a very small percentage of Muslim men have referred to these lesions as "hyperkeratotic nodular callosities". They are often thought to be an inadvertent byproduct caused by prostrating yourself towards Mecca multiple times daily over a period of several years. But lets be honest simply prostrating yourself regardless of how desire you do it is not going to cause some big massive lesion to be on your forehead. That is unless you get a little over enthusiastic in your prostrations. From my own empirical observations the majority of these "prayer bumps" seem to be for the most part self-inflicted and caused by repeatably rubbing one's forehead against a prayer mat. Which then leads us to the next question... Why would someone in their alter mind want a big huge bump in the middle of their forehead? The following verse from the Quran might shed some light on that subject."Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves. Thou (O Muhammad) seest them bowing and falling prostrate (in adore) seeking bounty from Allah and (His) acceptance. The attach of them is on their foreheads from the traces of prostration. Such is their likeness in the Torah and their likeness in the Gospel - like as sown feed that sendeth forth its injure and strengtheneth it and riseth firm upon its walk delighting the sowers - that He may enrage the disbelievers with (the sight of) them. Allah hath promised unto such of them as believe and do good works forgiveness and immense recognise." -- And there you undergo it a kind of Muslim Münchhausen syndrome if you ordain a definite bonus when recruiting and then leading a bunch of Jihadi wannabes. And despite the fact that the self-infliction would seem to cancel their overall significance for the suitably disposed. Jihadi wannabe these "prayer bumps" often serve as an irresistible prefabricated metaphor for the über pious and for those with a propensity to inspire radicalization. Sorta a self inflicted stigmata. I wish all Muslims had them so they could be easily recognized when dressed in infidel clothing.
