"At last A trip to Bali in May" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-19 12:18:29

At last. After almost 2 years of troubles with our businesses we are able to make some time for a trip to Bali. May 1 we will arrive on my favourite island to stay for almost 3 weeks. Looking forward to see al of my friends again and to see the state the land we “bought” in the North is in. During our stay we will try to get the drawing for the first villa on this land an the master plan to be completed so we can calculate the costs of building. The architect we are likely to choose is mr. Komang Suardika of PT Jeghier Architect Indonesia. If any of you have any experience with this architect I woul very much like to hear about it. Before I "bought" the land I have thought about the pro's and cons regarding the availableways to get what I want. My conclusion was that there is no really safe way to obtain land in Indonesia. Therefore I have chosen the method that looked the best for my personally. This was buying with a “nominee”. Time will tell if I did the “right” thing. For now I trust my nominee and have no doubt that it works out OK. By the way. Some friends of mine have bought some land in Spain. An EC-country of which most people think rules and regulations or OK. The bought a slope of a hill size about 10.000 metres priced Euro 60,00 /mtr2. After a year the came to know the local laws over there. Because of a project development on the other side of the hill a road was needed. That had to sell a part of their land to the local authorities 3000 mtr for which the received Euro 5.00 / mtr also the land now is divided in two. Legal advice told them there is nothing to do about this. The point is: every country has its flaws. Only time can tell if these flaws will turn against you. The safest way is just to do nothing but nothing will be accomplished then. First let me admit my admiration for your courage and honesty in first buying land in questionable circumstances and then having the balls to admit it in this forum. Hat off! I'm sure it will all work out. About the land grab in Spain. I mentioned it in the discussion that Bert refers to and with reference to that I have to add that it was (as far as I know) limited to the county of Valencia and originated in the 90s to fight the very people that have ended up misusing it - property speculators. From my admittedly limited understanding it came about through the fact that 2/3 of land deals then where basically illegal and being developed without any consideration at all to planning permission building ethics sustainability or consideration of the existing communities - does this sound familiar to anybody in Bali? In my researches through the Balinese real estate markets I can see some developments that are crying out for the "Spanish treatment". Putting a "Villa" in the middle of a rice terrace will be punished or should be in my humble opinion. The problem in Spain was that you had a low income country with cheap land in beach vicinity that had the "benefit" of being near richer European countries such as Germany. England etc. Now the better off citizens of these countries took advantage of the lax legal systems (then) proximity (now days pretty much everywhere is "close") and their natural superiority(!?) to build on land that was to their taste irregardless of the above mentioned caveats. Sound familiar Bali? The truly injured parties are those that came after and bought into what they thought was a established property only to find out later that it wasn't. My only reason in mentioning any of this is to call attention again to what seems to be a looming disaster. I get no particular joy or pleasure from this but am more particularly looking for some form of reassurance from the participants here - not the ever present "we've been doin it fur soo long it must be OK" argument. I personally don't think this will hold much water in a Balinese court of law and however "cheap" the land may be in Bali (as it was in Spain) when you put a $100 - 200. 000 house/villa on it well that's gonna hurt someone takes it away. There is no such thing as bad weather there are just badly dressed people. Correct me if I am wrong:>planning permissionNot knowingly messed with as far as I can tell permissions are usually obeyed sometimes buyers are not aware of land purpose maybe. >building ethicsWhat do you mean architecture ?If so no rules. (except maybe height)>sustainabilityThere is a small number of Eco things going on if that is what you mean.>consideration of the existing communitiesIts my idea that you can't get around the communities. You usually have to deal with a Kepala Desa or similar. Hi Bert,>planning permissionNot knowingly messed with as far as I can tell permissions are usually obeyed sometimes buyers are not aware of land purpose maybe. Prime examples would be your 15 - 50 meter beach regulation or the commercial use of villas that were built for "private" usage. But generally speaking as in Holland buildings have to conform to area standards of shape size color etc. I've read they are thinking of changing the maximum allowable heights in Bali too. (you refer to in your next point)>sustainabilityHas to do with the ecology yes but also as well with the general acceptance of a type or form of building by the local community - I guess it's one of those words like synergy - everybody understands something different. But what I guess I meant to question was the acceptance of the general community for more and more expensive luxury villas occupying more and more "community" land that the local people can never expect to take any part of or own. This has been a cause for massive problems. There is no such thing as bad weather there are just badly dressed people. Markit it depends on whether you are looking for investment (risky perhaps) or lifestyle. You are not going to get 'reassurance' from the participants of this forum. I think you are well aware now of the pro's and con's of becoming involved in property acquisitions in Indonesia now. Any risk is up to you. Current laws (or lack thereof) aside making the financial committments that go with making a developing somewhat politically unstable country you home carry risk. There are also potential heath risks and no-one is going to give you assurances there either. If you are looking for lifestyle and have the money you can buy (and carry the risk) - but maybe you would be more comfortable not carrying the risk and should find a long-term rental contract. It's horses for courses - each to their own. I think Rien's approach is about the best you can do. Inform yourself of the options and chose the one that best suits you and your comfort factor. I agree totally with you Freo. Why couldn't I have said it like that?BTW. I'm sure Markit meant "Congrats on your 500th post - this one makes sense just as the previous 499 did". Language; it's so tricky!Hey... I have 500 posts as well. Again we have a contributor crying out about looming land grabs by the gov or by locals - where the f do come up with this stuff - it's scare mongering. People who take the time to come her and set up a private home have always been welcomed - and most do so with great respect for the oportunity and thus follow the rules which while minimal due require approval of both the gov and the community.

I am still waiting for the finilisation of our move but with luck we will be back in Indonesia within the next 2 months. Cindy There is no competition between Dasha and me with respect to age. I am definitely older. However it sometimes surprises me how young buggers get the facts wrong. Peter. Paul & Mary had nothing to do with the "Leaving On A Jet-Plane" song. As far as I remember it was written by John Denver around 1967 and a cover version was released in the same year by some assort called The Mitchell Trio. (Whoever they were. I drop exactly.)The ironic thing was that John (Country Road... act Me Home) Denver died in a plane crash years later. He was the pilot. It wasn't a "jet". Maybe that made a difference. Hope you have a great time when you get here... Hi Phil,Leaving on a jetplane was written by John Denver and on his first albumRhymes and Reasons on RCA in 1969. Peter. Paul & Mary had their #1 hit with it end of 1969 in the USA!The song was covered by lots of interprets including Janis Joplin. Joan Baez and every boy observe camp with guitar and fire displace best regards also to ReniThorstenPS: Is you dog still eating mobile phones?_________________IN GOOGLE WE believe !Nasi sudah jadi bubur ! Yes. PPM had a hit with that song in 1969 but they didn't write it. My curiosity aroused. I tracked down The (Chad) Mitchell Trio. John Denver was a member between 1965-68. The group reformed in 1987 with Denver. And hi. Thorsten It's still famous with Balinese players even without fire-places. As for "Hell-Boy". (aka Arno).. it's not so much that he's given up eating hand-phones we just don't leave them lying around any more (or remote controls digital cameras.

"My Accent" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:08:58

I'm not sure why but I don't communicate quite the same as where I come from. populate don't undergo heavily noticeable accents where I come from but they do say a lot of phrases that are definitely regional. I have always been the type of person who has sort of absorbed communicate around her and the result is a completely un-identifiable evince with phrases and pronunciations thrown in there from all over. I don't proactively alter myself talk to sound like I go from somewhere specific. I simply try to pronounce things the way they are meant to be pronounced in the English language. For dilate. I say milk not melk as some people where I am from say. I say holiday instead of vacation. Hall - o- ween pronounced Hall like walking down the hall not "hull" o weenI saw this quiz on a link on a friends page and thought it was interesting: "You undergo a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an evince." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania southern Ohio southern Indiana southern Illinois and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good express for TV and radio. For more fascinating commentary on accents in America and abroad may I suggest one of my most favorite books ever. Bill Bryson's 'Mother play'. It researches where English came from why we talk the way we do its different variations around the world and why it is without a doubt the most wide move language used across the world.

I undergo to admit that some of my very favorite musicians are girl rap artists. I love that the genre is expanding and that being a good rapper doesn't mean you have to be one call race gender and rap just about hos hummers and bling. Missy Elliot has always had a very special displace in my heart. I think she has awesome style and is a clever great artist. She isn't pegged drink by her male contemporaries. I undergo been rocking out to her 'Party to Damascus' her collaboration with Wyclef Jean. Wycelf + Missy + a good defeat + some Arabic in the middle = Livi LOVES it. (Habibi is Arabic for girlfriend p s.)Another like of my life is Lady Sovereign. (I was her for Halloween) Some populate think she is lame and turn their eyes when I express my like for her (namely men) however. I think she is too legit to depart. First of all she is like 15 years old shes adjust to what she knows she's clever and funny and her music is G-O-O-D. So get over it she rocks. Check out her 'Random' video. AND MY NEW FAVORITE as of this year: Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam or M. I. A. She is so cool. She is a Sri Lankan/British painter and performer. Her music involves elements of rap electronica and has a indie under tone. I absolutely LOVE her. She came to NYC and was sold out in like. 2 seconds so I didn't get to go. Cool style as well. "Common New York Dilemma" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 17:18:09

One thing that sucks about this city is that there is so much cool stuff to do all the time that often you have too many alter options (a good problem to have) and you can miss out. This happened to me last night as I had tickets to see Pygmalion the (original non-musical version of My Fair Lady) starring Claire Danes and at the measure minute I got an email invite to go to a free movie screening of non-released film starring Emma Thompson. Rats. I gave the screening invite to my two co-workers and then went to Pygmalion - I was so happy to have tickets to this play that has been sold out and is even harder to get tickets to with the Broadway Blackout strike but I REALLY wanted to see that enter. Pygmalion was pristine. The actor who played Henry Higgins was phenomenally quirky and sight - on to the character and all the actors were strong without being overbearing. The accents were great. It was a high quality great play. And I am picky about accents. So I went to the movie screening. It's called Brideshead Revisited and Emma Thompson is in it. It was not good. They butchered the book that it was based on. A schedule that happens to be one of my favs. It was so lame. Acting was good butchering the book was not. I think that you made the wiser choice. experience nothing about the movie but you can still see that. Pygmalian will be harder to come by i evaluate.. but then again i don't experience much anymore.

"Hot Pockets!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:24:41

July 2007I am an East Coast expatriate hiding out in the Midwest... I am an urban gal living in the suburbs and occasionally hiding in the countryI am a yoga practitioner fitness enthusiast believer in the mind-body-spirit connection... I am a mom sister daughter and wife... I am an explorer; adventurous and curious about the world and people around me... I am educated in the formal comprehend but I obtain insight through everyday living... I created this communicate at a time of great fear and apprehension in my life. I chose to sustain it because of the discoveries about myself and the world around me that it has revealed. What you can evaluate to find here: the documentation of a love-hate relationship with the greater Philadelphia area This evening as I readied myself to go to aim for some diversionary candle-sniffing. I inadvertenly thought of the always-amusing Jim Gaffigan and his "hot pocket" routine. After an hour of aisle-gazing and cart-filling. I ambled to the checkout. As I thumped my bottles of Downy and Diet Lipton Citrus Green Tea on the conveyor sing a teenager behind me sheepishly back up up a dvd and asked his mom. "Can we get this? He is so funny."Mom glanced at the dvd and then broke into a smile. "Oh sure. He is funny. In a way he reminds me of George Carlin."At that point I looked away from the bags of laundry items I was about to buy glanced at the dvd and silently gushed with glee as I heard the teen boy remark. "Yeah he's funny. Have you ever heard him do 'Hot Pockets?'"For your enjoyment here is Jim Gaffigan and his signature (apparently) routine:
