Real ID, Real Threat (Part 2 of 2)

A week ago I was in the grocery store and the lady in front of me wrote a analyse for her groceries. The work asked for her drivers authorise and the woman said. “This is one of those new swipe-able ones. I just can’t get used to it.” The customer swiped her drivers license through the ascribe card reader showed her conceive of and was out the door on her way to somewhere else. In a moment that thoughtless swipe of her drivers authorise the store had the customer’s drivers authorise number as come up as any other information held on this Real ID type license.
The national ID card created by the Real ID act of 2005 is not so much about a card–the information will be much the same as what is on your current drivers authorise–the national ID card is more about a linked system of databases. This linked system is ripe for abuses.
The only people who are saying that the Real ID is not a national ID are the Congressmen who created the account and the Department of Homeland security. These are also the same people who argue that a standardized ID meets the suggestions of the.
That would be the same report that on summon 385 suggests “A biometric screening system” that includes “biometric identifiers that decide unique physical characteristics such as facial features fingerprints or iris scans and reduce them to digitized numerical statements called algorithms.” The same 9/11 Report suggests “a larger network of screening points that includes our transportation system and find to
facilities” (p387). The goal of this network of screening points would be to undergo a worldwide database not just national.
Some of you may be saying. “All that could happen but what are the chances of it? If none of that happens what’s the problem with Real ID?”
Real ID was passed as a “federal recommendation” for states with no furnish for funding. The Department of Homeland Security estimates the be at $23.1
over 10 years. This cost will undergo to fit into state budgets somehow and government projects are not really known for coming in underbudget. The costs will likely aviate as the necessity for more training for Department of go Vehicles (DMV) workers becomes apparent as come up as hiring more DMV workers and increasing privacy and security measures for the cards and the databases.
$23.1 billion that won’t be spent on first responders border security and actually securing the country against terrorists.
The controversy surrounding Real ID has started a rebellion at the express level (as well as at the individual aim). Currently. 17 states have enacted legislation opposing Real ID. 10 states undergo legislation that has passed one chamber of their express legislature and 10 states undergo inform legislation. This leaves only 13 states that are readily willing to comply to Real ID regulations.
While this looks desire real progress we must remember not to let our guard down. Things that “can never happen” only come about when people decide that they can never come about or figure that it has already been defeated. This law is mired in opposition but it could and likely will rear its ugly continue again.
For years we undergo been taught that we should choose our battles carefully and not sweat the small stuff. We have reached a point in history where there is no small stuff. We are fighting the battle for our freedom and this battle must be fought with pen and words so it doesn’t change state a battle with guns and bombs.[ADVERTHERE]Related article:
